For many years, the data center industry evolved on a relatively straightforward logic: hardware was standardized, chips were produced by a small number of semiconductor companies, and infrastructure operators simply procured, deployed, and optimized them for operations. This model enabled stability and rapid scalability for the internet, cloud computing, and digital services. However, the explosive growth of artificial intelligence is now disrupting this structure at its core. A fundamental shift is underway—one in which major technology corporations are no longer willing to rely on commercial chips, but instead are proactively designing their own processors tailored to their ecosystems.

This transformation is not driven by technological ambition alone, but rather by the inevitable pressures of performance, cost, and competition in the AI era. Deep learning models, particularly large language models, have pushed computational demand to an entirely new level. General-purpose chip architectures, originally designed to handle a wide range of tasks, are increasingly showing their limitations when faced with massive parallel workloads, extremely high memory bandwidth requirements, and ultra-low latency demands. In this context, continued reliance on standardized chips effectively means accepting suboptimal performance, higher costs, and diminished competitive advantage.
As a result, companies such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have chosen a different path: designing their own chips. This is not an impulsive move, but a long-term strategy aimed at restructuring the entire technology stack through deep integration. When Google developed its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), it was not merely creating a new processor; it was building a computing platform specifically optimized for its machine learning models. The TPU does not exist in isolation—it is tightly integrated with software ecosystems such as TensorFlow and services on Google Cloud, forming a seamless value chain from hardware to application.
Similarly, Amazon, through its Graviton and Trainium chips, has demonstrated a more economically driven approach. By developing chips based on ARM architecture, Amazon reduces its dependence on traditional suppliers like Intel and AMD, while simultaneously optimizing operational costs across its massive AWS infrastructure. Trainium, on the other hand, directly targets AI training workloads, where hardware costs account for a significant portion of total expenditure. Instead of accepting the high cost and limited supply of GPUs from NVIDIA, Amazon is building a more tailored alternative aligned with its internal needs.
Microsoft, as a key pillar of the global cloud ecosystem, is also actively participating in this transition. Its substantial investments in AI—particularly across enterprise services and large-scale models—require a level of infrastructure control that cannot be achieved through external chip dependency alone. The development of proprietary chips for Azure is therefore not just strategic, but essential to sustaining long-term competitiveness.
What unifies these efforts is a profound shift in how data centers are perceived. Previously regarded as passive infrastructure, data centers are now evolving into active technological entities. They are no longer simply locations for hosting servers, but integrated systems designed cohesively across chips, hardware, networking, and software layers. Within this system, chips are no longer interchangeable components—they are foundational elements that define the entire architecture.
This is why the concept of a “closed ecosystem” is becoming increasingly evident. When a company controls chip design, data center infrastructure, and software platforms simultaneously, it gains the ability to optimize performance at levels unattainable by open, generalized systems. At the same time, it establishes formidable barriers to entry for competitors. This represents a form of structural advantage, where vertical integration becomes the decisive factor in technological competition.
However, this trend also raises critical questions for the rest of the industry. Not every company possesses the resources to design its own chips, and not every country can deeply integrate into the semiconductor value chain. As a result, a clear stratification is emerging within the data center industry—where a small number of “super platforms” control core technologies, while others must choose between dependency and alternative strategies.
For emerging markets such as Vietnam, this landscape presents both challenges and opportunities. The challenge lies in the risk of widening technological gaps without a well-defined strategy. Conversely, opportunities exist in less saturated segments of the value chain, such as fabless chip design, packaging, testing, and the development of AI-specialized data centers. In a world where data centers and semiconductors are increasingly converging, selecting the right position within the value chain will determine the level of participation and benefit.
At a deeper level, the shift from “buying chips” to “designing chips” reflects a broader change in the logic of technological development. Where standardization once enabled scalability, optimization and customization at the infrastructure level are now becoming the key drivers of progress. This transformation is not only reshaping how data centers are built, but also redefining competition across the telecommunications and digital technology sectors.
In the AI era, where computational power has become a strategic resource, chips are no longer mere components. They represent the convergence of innovation, performance, and technological power. And as major technology corporations move toward designing their own chips, they are not simply pursuing short-term advantages—they are laying the foundation for closed ecosystems in which every layer is optimized toward a single objective: controlling the future of artificial intelligence.
